1. Passing your O’ Level

Most universities across the country demand that candidates possess 5 O’ Level credit passes in relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics in not more than 2 sittings. You are required to present WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB or its equivalence.

2. Passing your JAMB UTME (minimum cut off mark)

For you to stand a chance of securing admission to any Nigerian University using your JAMB scores, you need to score above a stipulated mark called jamb cut-off mark (usually 180/200) for most universities. Usually published every year for various tertiary institutions of learning, although it has been reduced this year (2017) to 120 and some universities have adopted this standard.

You should also note that passing the cut off mark is not a guarantee of admission, there are situations whereby students who score above the cut off mark are still not admitted, you should always take note of your chosen university's admission policies and capacity. .

3. Post UTME Screening Exercise.

This is conducted by each institution to select the proper candidates for admissions. Note that the final - admission total - score is calculated by merging both UTME score and the post UME score, this requires candidates to ace both exams. Some private universities conduct oral interviews based on their policy, however state and federal universities do not conduct oral interviews, the screening is the final step.

Post UTME and Jamb determine if you get admission or not.

4. Consider your Catchment Area

Universities sometimes give preferences to students based on their state of origin and some other factors. Federal universities are highly preferred by most students and this choice can be attributed to the affordability of tuition fees in comparison to private or state universities however, they use catchment areas.

5. Printing of Admission Letters

Congratulations! Now that you have been offered provisional admission, it is now up to you to decide whether you want to accept the offer or decline, interested candidates are to view and print out their admission letter from the matriculation’s board online for clearance and registration purposes. If you accept, you can go ahead to pay your acceptance fee as stipulated by the university.

6. Online and Physical clearance

Depending on the university, registration processes can be physical or online on the institution’s admissions official website or online portal for proper documentation of student data including verification of payment of acceptance fee. Required documents for submission includes First Leaving School Certificate or Testimonial or its equivalent, O’ Level results, birth certificate or birth declaration statement, medical report, admission letter printed from JAMB and other relevant documents.

7. Matriculation

Usually after necessary clearance, students start attending their lectures pending the matriculation ceremony. Matriculation officially welcomes and authenticates your admission and course. You are officially an undergraduate.
